  • Stay in your car. A staff member will assist you.
  • Please bring anything that needs to be returned to the school (teacher books, library books, packet 3, etc.) in a bag labeled with the student's name, teacher's name and grade level.

VW Eagles!

The weather is beginning to feel more like Summer than Spring! Hope you have enjoyed the sunshine the last few days.

  • Teachers will continue to offer support and resources for packet three similar to the support and resources offered with packet 2. The design of the packet is for our students to be able to work with more independence than previous packets. Packet 3 has been placed outside the office doors if you still need a copy. You can also access HERE.
  • The main office at VWES will be open from 8am-2pm (Monday-Friday) for the remainder of the school year. If you have a FIT Kids balance that needs to be paid, or if you need to complete new student registration, you may do so during these times.
  • VW yearbooks have arrived and we are in the process of sorting them by homeroom. We have a limited amount of extra soft cover yearbooks, which can be purchased for $20 (credit card, exact cash or local check to VWES) in the main office during the hours listed above. Extra yearbooks are first come, first served, and will not be held. All yearbooks will be distributed in your child's end of the year bag, which can be picked up the last week of school following the schedule below.
  • Student belongings can be picked up Tuesday, March 26 and Wednesday, March 27 from 9am to 6pm. You will pull through the car loop and stay in your car. A staff member will come to your car and ask for the student name, teacher name, and grade. A staff member will bring your child’s end of year bag out to the car. Just a few reminders of things we need you to do as we wrap up the school year:

  • District is asking that all returning students register for school online. We sent out information concerning how to do this, however it appears that information was shared prematurely due to some technical difficulties. We will resend this information again when it seems the system is working properly.

Eagle families! I hope everyone is staying safe and well. I have some updates and important information to share with you today.

  • Next week is Staff Appreciation Week and it would be a shame if we let it slip by us even if we are all in different places right now. Let’s take a moment to appreciate our teachers and assistants (parents that includes you too), counselors, nurse, office staff, bus drivers, cafeteria workers and day porters! We know without this crew, we couldn’t get through a day at VWES! We are grateful. Check out the week of appreciation HERE. Send them a virtual hello! I know appreciating them virtually is hard. I can promise they are missing their kids tremendously and a simple hello would be appreciated!

  • LCSD is providing a third and final at home learning packet. The 3rd learning packet consists of two pages. It will be available on Monday, May 11th online and for pickup at VWES between 8am - 5pm. We will communicate pick up and drop off procedures in the coming days.

Since there is a week gap in LCSD generated learning packets, learning for the week of May 4 will be provided at the school level by your child’s teacher. This is in an effort to remain consistent and will not be collected with LCSD generated packets. If you are still working on Packet 2, please continue to do so. We will be collecting Packet 1 (if you have not already turned in) and/or Packet 2 on Monday, May 11.

  • Students have many items in our school and families have teacher books and library books that need to be returned. The school will have designated pick up days the last week of school to allow pick up and drop off of these items. This will give all teachers time to safely pack/organize these items. We will also add artwork, and other items from student desks to these bags. If you have medicine to pick up from the nurse’s office you may do so on this day as well. We will send out details concerning drop off and pick up in the coming days.

  • We have not received our 2019-2020 VW yearbooks at this time. There has been a delay in production but we are on the list so they will be printed. However, It is unlikely that we will have them by the end of the school year. We will keep you posted as to how we will distribute them. We did order a few extra but those will be first come first serve once we have them in hand.

  • Have a negative lunch balance? Don’t worry!! An anonymous donor has taken care of the negative lunch balances for students at VWES. Yes, ALL of the negative balances have been taken care of. #thankful

A message from VAN WYCK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Eagle families! I'm sure you've heard the news that the Governor announced South Carolina school buildings will remain closed and learning will continue remotely through the end of the school year. Our hearts are broken, even though we know this is the right choice to keep our families safe.

We know you have a lot of questions about how we will wrap up this school year. We are working on getting those answers and we will get them out to you as soon as possible.

If you have not already picked up the second learning packet, you can do so at the school. Copies have been placed outside the main office doors. If you have any specific questions regarding the learning packet your child is working on, please reach out to your child's teacher.

Every year, we take the time to recognize a V-Dub teacher and staff member for a job well done. This year is no different. Please take a moment to vote on the person you believe deserves Teacher of the Year and Staff Member of the Year at VWES. Click HERE to cast your vote by Friday, May 15.

We will be posting daily virtual challenges on our Facebook page! If you don't already follow us- you can check it out here. It's a fun way to stay connected and it gives everyone a little something to look forward to. Yesterday it was 'Quaratine Cuts', today it's Birthday Celebrations. Stop by the page to see what we will post tomorrow!

We miss you all and we are looking forward to the next time we will be together again. We will be in touch.

VW Eagle families,

Thank you for taking the time to go over this information today. I have some important news and reminders for you.

Home Learning Packet 2 is now available online and can be viewed and printed HERE or follow the link from our school webpage.

If you would like to physically pick up a packet and/or turn in Packet 1, this will take place tomorrow, Thursday, April 9, from 8am to 5pm.

Some reminders concerning packet pickup/drop off:

  • We will have a barricade set up to form a line.
  • Please wait to enter the lobby if there are three people already inside.
  • Please be courteous and mindful of social distancing in the event you have to wait a few moments to enter.
  • Packet 2 will be available on tables in the lobby, marked by grade level.
  • Signs will direct you where to drop off Packet 1 and pick up Packet 2.
  • Make sure the student name is printed clearly on the top of your finished packet.
  • Please bring a pen from home as there will be a sheet in the lobby for you to initial return of Packet #1 and pickup of Packet #2.

Did someone say FREE?!? A parent shared this resource with me and I wanted to share it with you. Rosetta Stone is offering FREE language classes for students. This may be a good time to introduce your child to another language. I believe they have many to choose from. Click HERE to find out more. Just wanted to share!

Humbly,

April 6, 2020

VW Eagle families,

We miss our friends tremendously! We hope you and your family are well and safe. Please see the attachment regarding the distribution of the second LCSD learning packet. This will take place Thursday, April 9, from 8am to 5pm. We will also post copies of Packet #2 on our website the same day.

Some reminders concerning packet pickup/drop off:

  • Packets will be available on tables in the lobby, marked by grade level.
  • Plan to drop off Packet #1 when you pick up Packet #2.
  • Make sure the student name is printed clearly on the top of your finished packet. Place the finished packet in the turn in box, again marked by grade level.
  • Please bring a pen from home as there will be a sheet in the lobby for you to initial return of Packet #1 and pickup of Packet #2.
  • Be mindful of social distancing. Please wait to enter the lobby if there are already 3 people inside.

Teachers will continue to share optional learning activities with families this week. The required learning packets will not officially begin until Monday, April 20th. LCSD Spring Break will still take place from April 10-19. You are welcome to continue learning during spring break, but please note that teachers and school personnel will be on break until Monday, April 20th.

For the foreseeable future, the Powerschool parent portal has been closed. Teachers have been advised to complete and enter grades for reporting period 3, which ended on March 21st, with grades and assignments completed before school was closed because of the coronavirus.

These truly are unprecedented times that we are experiencing. As information and decisions related to school and instruction are decided, we will do our best to inform our families. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Humbly,

Steven Puckett
